The Range of Motion is done by utilizing a computerized muscle test. The J Tech Tracker program and resistance will take into account three consecutive ROM readings. If the measurements taken fall within 5 degrees or 10% of each other the study is considered valid. When testing muscle strength the patient is challenged to the break point, four consecutive readings are calibrated. The test is valid if the coefficient of variation or the maximum difference between successive repetitions is less than or equal to15%. The graphs will also show if any ratchet type oscillations occur in the force curve indicating sub maximal effort (malingering). Strength grades are given if there is a bilateral deficit greater than 15% present.
Therefore, to accurately and objectively document the patients present status and remove the possibility of sub maximum effort, the test is not only reasonable and medically necessary, but informative as well. The information gathered can change the course of treatment when clinically correlated to the patients condition. It can provide both a time frame for treatment, when the patient plateaus from care indicating the possibility of maximum improvement or further diagnostic testing if loss of strength and motion are detected.
Testing is performed usually three times during the course of treatment. Initial examination to establish a baseline and set rehabilitative goals for treatment. Midway to determine progress or if any restrictions in ROM or deficits in strength have occurred, usually around the time of neuropraxia,(breakdown in nerve tissue). Lastly at time of discharge to determine permanency, impairment or maximum benefit
