Physical therapy is a health care specialty involved with evaluating, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each individual patient. To achieve this goal, physical modalities such as exercise, heat, cold, electric stimulation, and massage are utilized.
Make sure that you receive physical therapy from a licensed physical therapist. Physical therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants are professional health care providers who are licensed by the state in which they practice.
Who can benefit from Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy can help people with both acute and chronic conditions and can help people of all ages. People of all health and fitness levels are candidates for physical therapy depending on your injury. Physical therapy is not just for individuals who have had a specific injury or surgery. Some of our patients suffer from chronic aches and pains without ever having had a specific injury. Contact our office for more information to see if you are candidate for physical therapy or Chiropractic treatment at Westbury Total Health Care
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: PM&R physicians are known as Physiatrists who are specialists trained in restoring function to the patient. Their non-surgical approach works to restore or maximize the functional skills, mobility, strength, and self-sufficiency of patients who have either temporary or permanent disability.
These disabilities may range from minor sports injuries to more complex conditions such as the effect of stroke, cancer (lymphedema), degenerative joint disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, spinal disc herniation and various other muscloskeletal conditions.
A PM&R physician education consists of four years of medical school followed by and additional four years of hospital based residency program. The diagnostic tools used by a PM&R physician are similar to those found in other medical specialties; history & examination, x-ray, MRI and electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCV) which measures electrical activity of the nerve/muscle.

What is involved in the Physical Therapy process?
If you decide to become a patient at Westbury Total Health Care , we will assist you in every way possible on your road to recovery. After scheduling you initial evaluation, the patient will be required to fill out all necessary paperwork prior to treatment. During the evaluation your history of the symptoms and functional limitations are discussed, followed by a thorough physical examination of the injured site. This assessment includes analysis of strength, flexibility, joint mobility, range of motion, posture, and body mechanics of the involved side compared to the non-involved side to determine the proper course of treatment. We then develop a manual treatment program that addresses all of these specific findings in addition to a stretching, and strengthening program to be completed during your visit. A customized Home Exercise Program is also developed and given to the patient to perform when he/she is not in PT.
Your Appointment
Your first visit should include an evaluation by the one of our board certified physicians and then a physical therapist. Our Staff will perform an examination to identify current and potential problems. Based on the results of the examination, and considering your specific goals, we will design a plan of care to include specific interventions and will propose a timetable to achieve these goals and optimize your function. Your physical therapist will likely provide you with instructions to perform exercises at home to facilitate your recovery. You should feel comfortable asking your physical therapist any questions regarding your course of care, including specifics regarding interventions and expectations.
What to Wear
For your physical therapy visit, you want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that allows you to move. Wear clothing that allows us to gain access to the injured part so that we can properly examine your injury.
You are encouraged to ask questions and can feel free to bring a family member or friend to help you comprehend all that transpires during this Initial Evaluation. You can schedule your follow up appointments with our front office staff at the end of this visit for times convenient to your schedule. This first visit is an exciting one, beginning you on your road to recovery.
Recurring Visits
We pride ourselves on seeing everyone at their scheduled appointment times for all recurring treatment sessions.
After you check in with the front desk, you will be greeted by a member of our Clinical staff who will lead you through your physical therapy routine. You will be spending time, one on one, with a physical therapist during each visit. We are not a gym. We provide individualized care and we need this time to appropriately reassess your condition and progress or modify our plan of care.
When all of our treatment goals have been achieved, we will create a comprehensive home exercise program tailored to your specific needs, activities and lifestyle so that you may return to optimal function and keep yourself in good health. Copays can be paid each visit or at the end of each week.
